How to Select the Best Roofing Material

Thryv • December 20, 2022

A new roof is a significant investment that provides shelter and protection for your property and household. The efficiency of the roof depends on several factors, including the material. Roofing materials are available in many types, each with its own benefits. Here are the things you should consider in order to select the best roofing material for your home.

Climate

The ideal roof must withstand strong winds, heavy rains, and other adverse weather conditions common in your region. Every roof responds differently to different weather conditions. For example, some roofing materials suffer extensive damage due to water exposure. Others can crack and split if your region receives too much sunshine.

For instance, slate, concrete, and terracotta materials are perfect for hot climates. If your home is in a colder region, go for materials that can trap heat, like asphalt shingles or metal.

Home Design

Different roofing materials work best with different architectural styles. For example, asphalt is a versatile material that is compatible with almost any home design. In contrast, tiles will work best with antique-style architectural designs.

Also, dark roofing materials work better in houses painted yellow, green, or red. On the other hand, if your house has a blue or gray color, choose black or dark gray roofs. Dark roofs may also be ideal for white homes.

Roofing Application

The roof material may be for a new building, as a replacement, or for an addition to the building. You will have more flexibility if the roofing material is for a brand-new structure or a complete roof replacement. That is because you don't have to consider the existing components, like the current roof materials or the underlying roof structure.

However, if the material is for an addition to an existing roof, you must select a material that blends in with the current structure.

Maintenance

The maintenance requirements of your roof depend on the roofing material. Some materials require frequent painting and recoating. In this case, you may have to hire a professional roofing contractor to do the maintenance. Also, you may have to clean the material and remove debris regularly.

Weight

How much weight can your roof support over a long period? If the roofing material is too heavy, the roof might lose its structural integrity. Instead, go for materials that boost the building's structural stability without placing an extra burden on the roof. Remember, the structural integrity of the roof naturally reduces as the roof ages.

Cost

Just like any other project, your budget will greatly determine the material you select. The prices of roofing materials vary depending on the production cost, quality, and brand. High-quality and long-lasting materials will have a higher price than low-quality ones.

Nevertheless, don't just consider the upfront cost. For example, a material can be cheap but will require replacement after a few years. The better strategy is to go for a more expensive material that will last longer.

Roof Slope

The roof slope determines how the roof drains water. If you have a sloping roof, like most American residential roofs, consider asphalt shingles. In contrast, if the roof's slope is low, get a specialized material with high water-resistance capabilities.

Energy Efficiency

Some materials reflect heat, while others absorb heat. Determine the thermal requirements of your home and select a roof that can help you have better energy efficiency. Energy-efficient roofs reduce your energy bills and have multiple environmental benefits.
